The pilot episode of the American television series The Middle, written by DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler and directed by Julie Anne Robinson, premiered on the ABC network in the United States on September 30, 2009. The pilot introduces viewers to the five central characters within the show who make up the Heck family: Frankie the working mother (played by Patricia Heaton); her husband Mike (Neil Flynn; and their three children - teenagers Axl (Charlie McDermott) and Sue (Eden Sher) and their youngest child Brick (Atticus Shaffer). The show follows the characters as they deal with everyday challenges and family life, with Frankie serving as narrator.
The critical reaction to the pilot episode were mostly favourable. The show held an aggregated score of 70/100 on the review website Metacritic. Many reviewers drew comparisons with another similarly named comedy series, Malcolm in the Middle.

Frankie is struggling in her career as a car salesman because she has yet to sell one. She finally thinks that she has made her first sale, but the car is stolen right in front of her. Meanwhile, Sue becomes part of the school choir... as part of the stage crew and Brick wants Frankie to come into school dressed as a superhero for a presentation, but neglects to tell her the correct day.
In its original American broadcast, "Pilot" was viewed by 8.71 million viewers and got a Nielsen rating of 2.6/8, coming 1st in the timeslot and 5th in the night.[1]
